Balafon Bounce - The Evolution Of Somali Disco-Funk with Bananas Overdose

In the 1970s and 80s, Mogadishu and Hargeisa pulsed with the sounds of Somali funk, disco, soul, and reggae. Musicians with afros and bell-bottoms filled the city’s nightclubs, blending traditional Somali rhythms with global grooves to create a fresh, funky sound that dominated the airwaves. This ‘golden era’ of Somali music was vibrant yet short-lived, as civil war scattered artists across the world and disrupted the thriving scene. Today, Somali disco funk and its revival remains a powerful reminder of the resilience of music.
